South African Herb Meets Gold-standard for Bronchial Support
Brought to you from the NEEDS Wellness Team
The herb Pelargonium sidoides was recently studied in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled multi-center study—the gold standard for clinical trial design—for its effectiveness in treating acute bronchitis.
In this study, patients rated their bronchitis symptoms, including cough, sputum, chest pain, and breathlessness to create a "Bronchitis Severity Score." Patients were divided into two groups: one took 1 ml of Pelargonium, three times daily; and the other took a placebo for a total of seven days. By Day 7, almost 90% of the patients in the Pelargonium group had a complete recovery versus only 65% of the patients in the placebo group. Between Day 3 and 5, significant improvements were seen in the Pelargonium group as compared to the placebo group.
Umcka Cold Care, from Nature's Way, is the alcohol extract of Pelargonium sidoides, an herb native to South Africa. Two other placebocontrolled studies have also demonstrated its efficacy for treating bronchitis, as well as its safety and efficacy as a treatment for sinusitis and general nasal congestion.
