Omega-3s: A Possible Preventative of Atherosclerosis?
Brought to you from the NEEDS Wellness Team Research on fish oil continues to support that Omega-3 essential fatty acids have amazing health benefits, especially for that of the arteries. An animal study, published in the February 2009 issue of Arteriolosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, compared the effects of different diets on the accumulation of fat in the aorta, the major vessel that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the entire body. Mice were fed one of three diets: a "Western" diet high in saturated fats, a fish-dominant diet rich in Omega-3 fats, or a balanced diet of both saturated fats and Omega-3 fats. The diet that was high in Omega-3s was found to prevent the entry of LDL ("bad") cholesterol into the arteries, which subsequently prevented the accumulation of cholesterol in the aorta. It appears that these healthy fats have the ability to decrease lipoprotein lipase, a molecule that traps LDL in the arterial wall. The accumulation of cholesterol in arteries leads to the progression of atherosclerosis, which damages blood vessels and blocks blood flow. This preliminary research indicates that fish oil may help prevent atherosclerosis. NutriNeeds' Fish Oil Omega-3 1,000 mg is molecularly distilled to remove PCBs, dioxins, and heavy metals such as lead and mercury. The process also reduces oxidation of the oil and helps keep it fresh and stable. This formula doesn't contain heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins, pesticides, or other unwanted compounds. |
