How to Choose a Probiotic that Provides Protection
Submitted by Probulin

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the word Probiotics is defined as: "Living microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host." "Pro" means "For", "Biotic" means "Life and the condition of living organisms", therefore together, probiotics means "Pro-Life; Live micro-organisms". (www.who.int)

In other words, probiotics are "good bacteria" that are beneficial to your health, especially your digestive system. Your native intestinal microflora is your indigenous probiotics. Probiotic supplements provide important living bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, which help to support digestive balance and health.

Many factors may contribute to an imbalance of your native gut flora, such as diet, stress, illness, certain medications like antibiotics, aging, and much more. Such an imbalance can contribute to digestive upset and may lead to other health related issues.

The concept of probiotics was born in the early 20th century when Russian scientist Elie Metchnikoff hypothesized about the use of fermented milk and healthy bacteria to elicit health benefits for people that consumed the yogurt-like fermented milk. He concluded that the fermented milk product helped to "seed" the intestines with beneficial bacteria. By seeding the intestines with these friendly probiotic bacteria, he found that it could help suppress the growth of bad bacteria or at the very least keep things in balance. These fermented milks are excellent examples of early probiotics. Modern probiotics have become a great deal more convenient and in many cases, can be more powerful and focused.

How Do You Choose a Probiotic Supplement?
Probiotic supplements are available in a number of different forms, such as capsules, tablets, powders, and yogurts. The good bacteria used in probiotic supplements are created by using fermentation—a method that is very similar to the origins of this discovery by Elie Metchnikoff. But of course, there have been some amazing advancements in technology since then!

Key features to look for in a high-quality probiotic:
• Includes 7 to 12 strains of probiotic bacteria; diversity is key
• Look for 5 to 10 billion CFU for daily use; 10 to 20 billion CFU for a more focused use
• Always includes prebiotics; at least 100 mg of prebiotics or more per serving
• Should have an "Acid Protection System" built in; preferably not a synthetic enteric coating system, which are laden with phthalates

What is a Prebiotic?
Prebiotics are food for probiotics, which actually help the probiotics grow and flourish. They are extremely important in supporting the survival of probiotics.

Prebiotic benefits include:

• Healthy bacteria-building potential
• Fiber-based
• Indigestible by bad bacteria
• Provide food for probiotics

The three most common prebiotics are Inulin (used in all Probulin® products), oligofructose, and polydextrose. When choosing a probiotic supplement it is important to make sure that a prebiotic fiber like Inulin is included in the formula.

What is the MAKTrek 3-D Probiotic Delivery System?
Also all Probulin products have more than just acid protection; they use the patent pending MAKTrek™ 3-D Probiotic Delivery System. This probiotic delivery system provides significant safeguards that can help ensure better survival rate of the living probiotic bacteria.

The following are the three D's of the MAKTrek™ 3-D system:
1) Two Step Acid Protection
• The probiotic bacteria are enrobed by an extract of brown seaweed (Lessonia nigrescens) called complex marine polysaccharides. Once blended, the final powder is encapsulated. When the capsule is swallowed it will come in contact with the stomach acid. The acid then dissolves the capsule and the complex marine polysaccharides will form a secondary internal capsule protecting the living probiotic cells from the stomach acid.

2) In-Transit Buffering
• This step is a proprietary, allnatural buffering system that helps support the in-transit digestive environment condition. Probiotic cells prefer balance and this system supports this balance.

3) Additional Safeguards
• The researched and documented strains used are naturally equipped to handle exposure to some common environmental elements that make survival difficult for these beneficial probiotic bacteria.

The MAKTrek™ 3-D Probiotic Delivery System has been scientifically studied using a specified stomach acid exposure simulation. During this simulation, the MAKTrek™ 3-D protected probiotic supplement displayed a greater survival rate than simply acid protection alone.
